
Timeline - History of the North Countries
Timeline of major events, with details.
- Year 0 – Foundation of the Nevinian Empire
Accounting of years begins at year 0, the first year of the fledgling Nevinian empire, formed from the scattered tribes of the southern savannas.
- Year 27 – Exploration of the North
Nevinian settlers explore the colder, but more fertile lands to the north of Nevinia, stopping where the Karod claim their borders.
- Year 33 – Colonies are formed
Six years afterward, official colonies are formed, and the first towns are built.
- Year 67 – Provinces are formed
Large amounts of people flock to the open frontiers of the North, and at this point the area is divided into provinces for easier management.
- Year 79 – Assassination of Caicephus
The Nevinian Empire, stable for nearly eighty years, is thrown into chaos when Emperor Caicephus, a highly popular leader, is assassinated by unknown assailants. Many years of internal politics greatly weaken the Empire
- Year 117 – Distinction between Provinces
Without strong central leadership, the Northern Colonies have been left to govern themselves. At this point, dialects have become distinct enough to classify as separate languages, and the Colonies begin to diversify themselves.
- Year 13o – Phylones reunites the Empire
Phylones, a political and tactical mastermind, finally gathers the Nevinian Empire together, and reforges the government. He is made Emperor.
- Year 142 – Progress in Nevinia
Commerce and business flourish under Phylones’ reign. Among the notable achievements are the building of the great roads of Nevinia, the construction of the Loci, and the rebuilding of the capitals walls.
- Year 170 – Cerenis the Bold takes command
Phylones dies of liver failure. Cerenis the Bold, leader of the military, takes control of the government. His wisdom in battle was lacking in politics, and the North Colonies suffered during his reign.
- Year 182 – Secession of the North Colonies
After years of intolerable injustice, the North Colonies unite sign the Charter of Autonomy, and secede from Nevinia, becoming the Northern States.
- Year 190 – Nevinia attacked
Various tribes from the poorer parts of the south strike against Nevinia, leading damaging raids and, in a particularly bold move, kill Cerenis the Bold.
- Year 201 – Northern States gain freedom
The Northern States strike Nevinia while it is week, and in the year 201, they are finally officially recognized as a separate country by the Empire.
- Year 223 – Cholak seeks asylum in the North
Cholak, having created the Leotaur and possibly Nagai races in the south, is driven from the land by the tribesmen, who view the crossbred as an abomination. He seeks refuge in the Northern States and creates the other crossbred unhindered.
- Year 279 – Destruction of the Nevinian Empire
Following years of peace, a belligerent military leader is made emperor, and seeks to reclaim the Northern States. While the majority of his army is in the north, an alliance of enemies from the west and south of Nevinia attack. The Nevinian Empire is broken.
- Year 288 – Fragmentation of the Northern States
Following the Great Nevinian Exodus, during which all survivors fled to the North, opposing policies on the issue sunder the Northern States, who fragment into separate countries. Mithere takes the brunt of refugees, while Chiaris adopts the legal system. Toiau and Saartur remake their governments completely.
- Year 320 – Rebellion of Iryx
Under the tyrannical oppression of the Toiaun Government at the time a sizable rebel group seizes the area of land behind the Okyr mountain range, and defend themselves there. After several years of war, Toiau all but gives up any attempts at reclaiming their land. The rebels dub their new country Iryx, and form it as a revolutionary new form of government, a democracy.
- Year 333 – The Saartur/Centaur Arrangement
Saartur diplomats arrange deals with the Centaurs, exchanging lands in exchange for assistance maintaining their borders. With the success of the arrangement, most other Crossbred races create alliances or simply peace treaties with the North Countries.
- Year 343 – Start of the Dylian Wars
Numerous groups of rebels with various agendas and motives spring up across the country like wildfire, inspired by Iryx’s success. Most are largely unsuccessful, but the numerous groups create many problems during this period.
- Year 386 – Piracy flourishes
A massive tsunami completely destroys Vriea. The loss of the major seaport leads to a depression in all marine industries. Piracy flourishes during this period, as the navy is heavily damaged and constantly busy protecting the port from attack while it is rebuilt.
- Year 411 – Triel taken and destroyed
A mass effort by the independent rebel factions take Triel, the capital of Chiaris. The Royalty retreat to Cuaph, and the rebels prepare a major siege. However, before an attack can be made, foolish rebel soldiers attack a pair of Dark Ones. When one of them is killed, the other commits the Release, destroying Triel, and breaking Cuaph from the mainland. Nearly all rebels are destroyed, and Triel is rebuilt as Ratriel.
- Year 426 – Karod attacks
Karod attacks Chiaris and Mithere in a series of raids. These assaults cease when Taront is taken, and the Karod increase their defenses.
- Year 469 – Rebels eradicated
The final groups of rebels are corralled and defeated in the battle of Xeisoa, and any survivors retreat to Iryx.
- Year 491 – Elves gain the Slyphwood
A group of elves led by the mystics Seloas and Delro manage to negotiate with Saartur, Toiau, and Mithere and gain the exclusive rights to the Slyphwood, now regarded as a no-mans-land between the three.
- Year 513 – Straitguard destroyed and rebuilt
After earthquakes destroy Straitguard, the renowned architect Vende rebuilds the entire castle, adding a number of revolutionary designs and fortifications.
- Year 527 – Wavestead is formed
When piracy reaches critical levels, King Landon constructs Wavestead as a safe harbor, and augments the navy. Piracy decreases dramatically.
- Year 544 – Esser ranges taken and reclaimed
In a bold move, Mithere attacks Chiaris from two fronts, and claims the rich Esser ranges briefly. A legendary mass cavalry attack reclaims the area, until they are halted at the rivers, which now form the borders.
- Year 576 – The Great Wars begin
The Great Wars begin for unclear reasons. It proves to be the bloodiest in several generations, involving all the North Countries save Iryx. Although thousands die, the borders change little.
- Year 581 – King Mysaar of the Saarturs captured
While preoccupied to the north, the Caporis, a conglomeration of the tribes that destroyed Nevinia, attack from the south, several cities are claimed, and King Mysaar is kidnapped. He is eventually ransomed in exchange for the Kiyen Peninsula.
- Year 616 – Islehold taken
In one of the few lasting changes of the Great Wars, Toiau captures Islehold and is renamed Jeieu.
- Year 649 – End of the Great Wars
After 73 bloody years, the Great Wars finally end with the treaty of Reniva.
- Year 653 – Pact of Aludar
The Crossbred hold a mass conference in relative secrecy. Aludar, an Avian leader, creates a Pact binding the Crossbred to a set alliances and rules, which are currently known only to them.
- Year 672 - Sword of Lithra forged and stolen
The enchanter Lithra creates a powerful sword, which is stolen by his apprentice, setting in motion monumental events.
- Year 682 – Assassination in Toiau
The Grand Sovereign of Toiau is killed by unknown forces, causing chaos and unrest.
- Year 691 – Elves gain land in Fernhead
The elves create further treaties with Mithere, offering military support and valuable items in exchange for land in Fernhead Forest. A colony is begun there.
- Present
It is currently the year 699 since the foundation of the Nevinian Empire, looming on the 700th anniversary of that date, and nearly 500 years since the official acknowledgment of the Northern States. Lithra is still seeking his lost sword, Resca is preparing to set his devious plots in motion, and political unrest in Toiau is growing threatening…
