The Dark Ones, are, as their name suggests, shadowy figures. Their skin is dark gray, often with a slight blue tint. All dark ones are clad in gray and black clothing, and always wear a cape or cloak with a hood. They are are suspected to be immortal beings, and only a few are ever on the earth.
The Dark Ones have no discernible origins, and are a force as primal as the earth itself. The widely accepted view among the philosophers and scholars of the world holds that Dark Ones are the elements incarnate, weather in human form. This theory is borne out by their supernatural affinity with the earth and sky.
The Dark Ones remain aloof from human influence, and have no regard for the rules of men or elves. They wander where they will, following their own code. They are rumored to posses psychic powers as well, for they never speak, but their meaning is clear. They do not seem to posses any moral or ethical laws understandable by men, but do appear to follow a code of order. However, this order is completely unpredictable, as small changes can cause drastic changes.
Most remarkable, however, is their power of the forces of nature. The weather is inextricably tied to their mood. When they pass through villages, great care is always taken not to disturb them. Those that do this successfully are usually rewarded with fine weather or rain when necessary. This power can also prove devastating.
During the Dylian Wars, rebels had taken the city now known as Ratriel. During the assault, a Dark One was killed by ignorant soldiers, an action unprecedented in recorded history. Although Dark Ones are generally solitary, this one was bonded to a partner. In silent anguish, he committed The Release. All of his vast power was unleashed upon the city. Witnesses from afar say a great wave of flame swept through the city, followed by tornado, and finally, a great earthquake that collapsed the earth for miles around, allowing the sea to rush in and bury the city forever.
