The North Countries

Mithere is a monarchy, and the most stable of the North Countries. Mithere is renowned for its military prowess, and is the second largest presence in the Setru Ocean. Following the Nevinian Exodus, Mithere accepted the majority of immigrants, and it’s royalty hold the purest claim to the Nevinian bloodline. Mithere’s primary industries lay in farming and mining. It is also the exclusive home of the Avians (in any significant  quantities).

The political structure in Chiaris most closely resembles that of the original Nevinian Empire, consisting of one Exaltant (or Emperor ) whose power is balanced by a council of nobles. Chiaris is a staunch advocate of Nevinian tradition, and continues to practice the state religion. One of their greatest assets is the highly fertile valley between the Esser ranges, also rumored to be the source of many mystical powers. Chiaris has two strongholds, Cuaph, the island stronghold and capital, and Siermon, the last defense, deep in the mountains near the border.

Toiau is the greatest naval presence in North, and one of the greatest in the world. Although the nation of Toiau is only of average size, it controls a vast multitude of islands to the east. As such, their government is mostly constructed of simple clans and tribes, who report to Vriea, the capital. With little intervention from the Grand Sovereign, leadership tends to be strict, and inconsistent. However, Toiau has an unfortunate history of tyrannical leaders that keep the country under control. Politics are always a dangerous business in Toiau, and the dangerous and oppressive conditions lead directly to the rebellion of Iryx.

Saartur is by far the largest of the North Countries, extending a great deal beyond the area shown on the above map. However, the majority of this are is open grasslands. The population tends to congregate near the edges of the country, where forests, rivers, and mountains provide resources. There are however, bands of nomads that manage a living from the plains. Saartur was the first country to broker a treaty with the Crossbred, exchanging lands to the Centaurs in return for help patrolling the borders. The majority of Centaurs can thus be found there. The people are led by a council whose members are chosen by both popular choice and trial by arms. Saartur is respected for its cavalry and chariots, as well as their agriculture.

Iryx is a democracy, the first of its kind in the world. After tyranny from Toiau’s leadership at the time, they rebelled, retreating to the impenetrable defenses of the Okyr Range. They remain a fiercely independent nation ruled by the people, and often serve as a refuge and political safe haven. They have excellent stone and gem industries.

Karod is not one of the “official” North Countries, as its inhabitants were already living in the area and did not descend from Nevinians, immediately apparent by their dark skin. They are a fierce people, who guard their borders jealously, and no trade is allowed across borders. They have never agreed to negotiations of any kind. As such, little is known of them other than their excellent woodwork, ferocity in battle, and mastery of the axe in both cases.
